Summary

Description

Dated 1874, with later 20th century additions and alterations. Quadrangular, courtyard plan (former) steading converted as residential with 2 storey ranges to SW and SE and single storey ranges to NW and NE. Tooled random rubble with stugged dressings; polished dressings to NE and NW blocks and courtyard elevation of SW block. Projecting cills; long and short quoins.

NE ELEVATION: symmetrical; 4 bay; window to each bay grouped to centre; flanked to outer left and right by broad section of blank wall.

NW ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 9 bay. Boarded timber hatches with iron hinges to centre bay and 3 bays to left; gabled bay advanced to outer left with window to centre and small window to right return. Small pane timber door to penultimate bay to right flanked by 2 windows to left and one window to right.

SW ELEVATION: near symmetrical. Single storey piend roof jamb with lean to addition advanced to centre with 2 timber doors and a single window to right return; tall corniced circular red brick stack to re entrant angle to left; window to bay to right; modern glazed door with window centred above to outer right.

SE ELEVATION: formerly cartshed and granary. Asymmetrical; 5 bay. Segmental arched cart arches to 3 central bays, with chamfered reveals; windows to 3 central bays at 1st floor; segmental arched cart arch to single storey, single bay, piend roofed addition to outer right. Gabled bay advanced to outer left with window centred at ground floor; tooled panel reading ?RD 1874? set in gablehead above.

COURTYARD ELEVATIONS:

SE Elevation: asymmetrical; 5 bay; timber door reached by 3 stone steps to penultimate bay to left, irregular fenestration to remainder.

SW Elevation: near symmetrical; 5 bay; modern glazing and door in wide opening to centre; regular fenestration to ground and 1st floors of outer bays.

NW Elevation: asymmetrical; 8 bay; modern glazed timber door to 4th bay from right; with modern garage door to each bay to right; regular fenestration to bays to left.

NE Elevation: asymmetrical; 4 bay; modern panelled timber door and glazing to penultimate bay to left; regular fenestration to bays to right; narrow window to bay to outer left. Modern glazing and doors to wide opening to centre of gabled right return.

Modern glazing throughout, single pane pivoting windows, with variety of small pane windows to SW and SE elevations. Grey slate roofs with lead ridges. Coped rubble and harled ridge stacks with circular cans. Combination of plastic and cast iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1997.

Statement of Special Interest

The name suggests that Harvieston Mains was part of the estate of Harvieston House (see separate listing). However, "RD" stands for Robert Dundas which suggests it was actually the property of Arniston House (see separate listing). It is no longer operational as a farm, but has been converted into residential units in such a way as to respect the essential character of its original agricultural function.
