Description

Patrick Wilson, 1855. 3-storey rectangular-plan range of artisan housing at right angle to street. Squared and snecked stugged rubble; polished grey sandstone ashlar dressings. Strip quoins; droved long and short surrounds.

SE (FOUNTAINBRIDGE) ELEVATION: 2-bay gable end, chamfered at corner to left. Shopfront with moulded, shouldered windows; recessed central entrance door; replacement coursed pink sandstone masonry flanking; single windows to upper floors; plaque with "Chalmers Buildings 1855" carved in relief between 1st floor windows; round-arched single window in gable; slit light to left. Narrow single lights to 1st and 2nd floors of chamfered corner.

SW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 18-bay. Doorpieces with bracketed cornices to centre of each 3-bay section at ground (except section to outer right); single windows flanking; painted architraves; cill course to 1st floor of 12 bays to left; single windows to 1st and 2nd floors of all bays; crowstepped pediment to dormer to roof of 4th bay from right; piended wallhead gable with slit light and stack to bay to outer right.

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate piended roof; coped gablehead and wallhead stacks with some corniced cans, machicolated to SE. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1997.

Statement of Special Interest

As architect to the Pilrig Buildings off Leith Walk of 1850-1, Patrick Wilson influenced other housing schemes of the mid-19th century including Rosebank Cottages and Rosemount Buildings in nearby Gardner's Crescent.
