Description

1850. 2 storeys and attic, L-plan classical house. Sandstone ashlar, channelled masonry to ground floor, band course above, eaves band, cornice and blocking course. 1st floor windows with long and short margins. Rusticated quoins at 1st floor.

E (ENTRANCE) FRONT: columned portico set obliquely in re-entrant angle of wings; mutule cornice, balustrade, glazed light to ridge side. 2-bay wing to left; window in outer bay now a door, plain openings at ground floor 1st floor bays symmetrical above, piended dormer off set to left. 1-bay wing to right; blind at ground floor, single storey extension to right with channelling to match, gable end squared and snecked sandstone, as gable end of main block. South facing gable to left wing; 2-bay with blinded windows.

W (GARDEN) FRONT: 3-bay. Doorway to centre, window above lighting staircase, full-height canted window to left with 4 lights at ground and 1st floors, cornice between floors, piended dormer above. Tripartite windows to right bay, plain margins, cornice between floors, piended dormer above.

N FRONT: 2-bay gable end to right with blinded windows in outer bay. 2-bay wing to left in squared and snecked sandstone, narrow windows to inner bay. Single storey extension to left with doorway.

12-pane timber sash and case windows to entrance front, later plate glass windows to garden front, varied to N front. Grey slate, coped skews, ashlar gablehead stacks and one at ridge of lesser wing.

INTERIOR: cornice in portico, rich modillion cornice in entrance hall, cornices throughout building. Upstairs room to N overlooking garden; high dado rail with cross strap and patera decoration, egg and dart cornice and deep relief plasterwork to ceiling in geometric lozenge, circular and angular pattern, edges enriched with decorative mouldings. Buff coloured marble fireplace with rounded pilaster ends. Ground floor room overlooking garden; cornice and dark grey marble? pilastered fireplace. Staircase with wood banisters and carvings.

OUTBUILDINGS: twin garages in squared and snecked sandstone, piended roof to E. Various outbuildings to N. Boundary walls varied; rubblestone and brick, to E as boundaries with Nos 193 Academy Road built in grounds.

Statement of Special Interest

Built for Mr Campbell stone mason. Staircase from his other house Williamfield now demolished ref Annfield House Hotel.
