Summary

Description

Mid 19th century with later alterations and additions. Single storey with attic, rectangular-plan, 3-bay house with later single storey additions to rear. Stugged ashlar with droved ashlar dressings; harl-pointed whinstone and sandstone rubble to side and rear elevations; harled modern platform-roofed additions. Base course, eaves course.

SE ELEVATION: advanced bay to centre with polished ashlar advanced, simple porch with ashlar lean-to to gable above; bipartite Tudor-arched window to gablehead, heraldic emblem above (see Notes). Window with ashlar canopy above to each flanking bay.

NW ELEVATION: truncated window to centre, at 1st floor. Single storey additions at ground (1978 and 1981); that to left projecting NE beyond line of house.

SW AND NE ELEVATIONS: crowstepped gable to each.

6-pane timber casement windows (see Notes); traceried window to bipartite at centre; variety of windows to rear. Graded slate roof with harled wallhead stack to each side elevation gable. Modern box-dormers to flanking bays to SE and to left of NW. Droved ashlar coping to crowstepped gables.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1996.

BRIDGE: bridge over lade formerly leading to mill, to SE of house. Rubble and skew (forming tunnel-like effect).

Statement of Special Interest

The heraldic emblem is of a chained swan or goose with "FEIGHT" inscribed on ribbon scroll above. The present owners have an old photograph of the house at the beginning of the century. This shows that the windows were at that time diamond-paned and that there were ashlar dormerheads with shield to each gablehead and corbelled at eaves course. Steeply falling land to SE to mill lade. The mill was working until 1948. The road which passes in front of the house was formerly the main road, which has since been diverted to N of house.
