Description

18th century, built as 2-storey, 3-bay laird's house, extended circa 1800 to 5-bays, and with later 19th century alterations. Random rubble; harl-pointed originally; windows and doors with roughly droved red sandstone margins, some openings blocked, enlarged or introduced later in 19th century. Steeply-pitched roof, originally thatched, now replaced by corrugated iron roof, but original adzed A-frame roof timbers retained inside; end stacks with thackstanes.

FRONT (SE) ELEVATION: 5 irregular bays (2-3); variety of glazing patterns, mostly 4-pane sash and case windows; bipartite at 2nd bay of ground floor altered with later 19th century mullion, and 12-pane sash and case glazing to each light. Door at bay 4 (in later block) 4-panel with narrow rectangular 6-pane fanlight; window above with modern plate glass sash and case glazing.

Flat-roofed single-storey brick (rendered) addition to NE end gable which is linked to mid 19th century gateway leading to orchard at NE.

REAR ELEVATION: low single-storey porch with modern slated roof projecting to right; moat openings blocked, except: rear door in roughly splayed reveals with timber lintel to left of porch, small square fixed 9-pane window at 1st near centre, and bipartite window at left hand bay at 1st (enlargement). Original single-storey outbuilding attached at SW gable, with single 4-pane window to front and garage door to rear elevations.

Statement of Special Interest

Probably corresponds with the "small house" referred to in OS namebooks (see REFERENCES) as "having small gardens attached... the only part of Bewlie Moss which is cultivated".
