Description

John Kinross, circa 1900. Quadrangular court, central part of larger farm complex enclosed to S by dairy court and abutted to NE by fire station and power house (see separate listings). Squared and snecked rubble with droved ashlar dressings. Single and 2-storey ranges.

N RANGE: 2-storey. Abutted to NE by fire station. Full-height, round-arched pend entrance to E of centre with roll-moulded surround to N; 2 doors under pend at ground, that to S round-arched to internal stair, and hayloft opening above. N elevation with spur stones to pend; 3 bays to right of pend comprised of segmental carriage arch (with 2-leaf boarded doors), flanked by windows and with smaller window above. Gabled return to W with boarded door at ground and window above. To court, S elevation, abutted to W by single storey W range and to E by 2-storey granary, entered at 1st floor by stone forestair running up S elevation of otherwise blank N range. Former openings blocked.

W RANGE: single storey cattle box range with roof pitch swept up to meet near ridge height of neighbouring 2-storey range. Outer elevation with gabled return of N range to left, variety of openings, doorw and windows; 2 sets of 2-leaf doors, 1 set boarded, 1 set modern. Elevation to court similarly detailed.

E RANGE: 2-storey to N, with 3 square hayloft windows at 1st floor to both sides above cattle boxes at ground; segmental-arched opening with sliding doors to court, flanked by windows, door to outer right at ground and pedimented loft door to left in re-entrant angle with N range, reached by forestair (see above); outer elevation with tall door to outer left and 3 square windows at ground (detailed as those above). Crowstepped gable with battered coping dividing 2-storey part of range from single storey. Lower part with wide door (2-leaf doors), window and stable door to court elevation, outer elevation with pedestrian door (sliding door) and stable grilles near wallhead.

Small-pane timber windows, most 3-pane fixed uppers and sliding timber ventilation shutters below. Predominantly graded grey slate roofs, slates raised for ventilation course over SE stable, corrugated sheet metal to W range; some cast-iron rooflights and glazed sheets.
