Description

Begun 1836. Long, 3-storey and loft, 34-bay rubble-built block, with margins to S elevation, converted to residential late 1980s. Built in 3 sections; 6 bays to E probably earliest, with margins to N elevation; 14 bays to W probably most recent construction. Square-headed door and window openings, some altered. Mostly modern louvred glazing. Single gabled loft opening to N elevation, 2 windows to each level of W gable. 2 tiers of skylights. Straight skews, end stacks and slate roof.

Statement of Special Interest

Founded in 1825, J and D Paton's Woollen Mill was one of eight established beside the Tillicoultry Burn. By 1987 it was one of only four surviving buildings, and the last still producing knitwear. The production of fine shawls, tartans and tweeds won Patons a Gold Medal in the 1851 Great Exhibition.
