Description

John Boyd, 1935. 2-storey L-plan asymmetrical Art Deco house. Vermiculated stuccoed elevations, brick plinth rendered cills and band course to balcony and parapet.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 3 bays; window at ground and 1st floor to outer left, recessed bay to right with boarded 2-leaf door with brick architrave, tripartite French window (2-leaf door to centre flanked by narrow windows) to right, window above at 1st floor; further recessed bay to outer right with French window at ground, window in re-entrant angle at 1st floor and to outer right cantilevered parapet above, curved at angle. Cantilevered deck-balcony curved at angle to centre and outer right at 1st floor. Flight of steps to entrance with terrace to right enclosed by coped brick plinth.

E ELEVATION: window at ground and 1st floor to outer left, recessed

3 bays to right, window to centre flanked by narrower windoes, (new) door to outer right.

N ELEVATION: blocked door to outer left, 2 narrow windows to right; asymmetrical return to right, door off-centre left, window above to right, 2 narrow windows slightly recessed to right at ground, 3 above; tall stair window in re-entrant angle, door to right, 3 narrow windows at ground and 1st floor to right.

WEST ELEVATION: 2 widely spaced windows at ground and 1st floor, advanced chimney wall to centre with coped wallhead stack.

Fixed and casement metal windows with lying-pane glazing. Flat-roof terrace, original rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: fine timber panelled hall and stair. Many original features including sanitary fittings, Vitrolite tiles and chrome plumbing, fine etched glazed panelled door to roof terrace.

Statement of Special Interest

Built for R S McNicol on the foundations of Balvaird with burnt down in 1932. In the grounds Robert Sills' refurbishment of the former stables to Balvaird 1910, yellow sandstone and a portly cupola by A N Paterson. Street name changed from Abercromby Street East, 1994.
