Summary

Description

Maitland and Sons, Tain, 1905-7. Asymmetrical 2-storey

shooting lodge. Bullfaced rubble, tooled ashlar dressings.

Entrance in S front in advanced square 3-storey tower with

corbelled and crenellated wallhead with similarly detailed

caphouse and angle stair turret. Simple recessed entrance

door with McCorquodale coat of arms above. Gabled bays flank

entrance, some as canted bay windows rising full height

right with swept corbelling below gable and with angled

alignment SW. East elevation also gabled, but plainer and

housing service area at NE. French windows in dining room E

gable; single and 2-pane glazing; coped and string-coursed

ridge and end stacks, the latter was slightly projecting and

corbelled gable flues; carved guilloche moulding to front

bargeboards; slate roofs.

Interior; oak panelled entrance stairhall; slender turned

balusters to stair case and 21st floor landing; portion of

hall abutting staircase partially screened by basket arched

arcade supported by fluted wooden pilasters with Ionic

capitals; moulded chimneypiece supported by engaged columns,

carved overmantel. Drawing room; simple ceiling cornice;

ornate Renaissance revival carved chimneypiece.

Dining room; decorative ceiling cornice; carved chimneypiece.

Library; panelled library with some reused panelling;

moulded plaster ceiling; moulded wooden chimneypiece

supported by substantial turned balusters.

Statement of Special Interest

Built for Mr and Mrs McCorquodale of Dalcroy and sometimes

referred to as Dalcroy Lodge. Commanding site on rise

overlooking River Spey. Stable and garage range to E of house

not included in listing.

About Listed Buildings
