Description

Sir Albert Richardson, 1958. Distillery complex grouped in

wide shallow semi-circle facing W and fronting A95 road.

Most buildings white harled with grey polished ashlar or

bullfaced granite margins and dressings.

The description of individual buildings commenced with

the distillery manager's house left (N) and proceeds right

(S). Manager's house. 2-storey, symmetrical 3-bay S facing

house with 3-facetted canted E and W gables, the outer facets

having ground and 1st floor windows continuous with front

fenestration and end gables with central flues. Harled

with simulated sandstone ashlar margins and dressings.

Centre door masked by single storey canted porch with narrow

side lights and slate roof. 12-pane glazing; deep base and

eaves courses; coped shoulded end stacks; facetted grey-green

slate roof. Single storey, 3-bay service court and sunroom

extend from E gable with blind S elevation delineated by

harbled pilaster strips and with oculi in outer bays; shallow

piended copper roof. Duty free warehouses, 1 and 2. Range

of 6 harled warehouses with long W elevation defined by

polished granite ashlar pilaster strips. Continuous series

of gables at N and S with irregular entrances in S and

slit vents to each gable.

Duty free warehouses, 3 and 4. Further ranges of harled

warehouses grouped to rear of distillery complex.

Distillery and offices. Tall rectangular distillery with

long S facing wide 3-bay elevation with single storey low

wings projecting from outer bays forming U-plan court

approached by flight of shallow steps. Harled with polished

or bullfaced grey granite dressings and margins.

Centre bay delineated by bullfaced pilaster strips linked

at middle height by deep shaped band/lintel course

defining ground floor entrance area with wide centre recessed

door and paired flanking windows alternated by polished

ashlar engaged pilasters.

Series of 3 3-light windows at wallhead height divided by

pilaster strips; long box dormers and continuous dormer ridge

lights with 3 square louvred ridge vents. Copper roof and

dormer facing. Tall rear brick chimney. End gables lit by

giant recessed round-headed light rising full height in

slightly advanced centre bay defined by long-short

detailing and with band course at impost level.

Lower wings project from outer bays (offices L, duty

warehouse, R) forming U-plan court approached by flights of

steps. Mirrored 3-bay W fronts with centre tripartites and

long/short angle detailing.

Off-centre entrance with narrow side lights to offices in S

elevation of wing. Both blocks with shallow piended copper

roofs raised as extended copper faced top lights.

Generator house (former transformer and switch room with

cooperage rear). Tall harled building with long elevations

N and S; bullfaced ashlar, polished granite and dark grey

brick dressings and margins. Paired centre entrances in W

gable in shallow round-headed recess defined by bullfaced

ashlar and with similar bandcourse and pilaster strips.

Similar E rear gable with single entrance. Long elevations

divided by dark grey brick pilaster strips. 6 swept dormer

vents in S side of roof. Centre dome cupola surmounts square

clock with raised faces N and S; copper roofs. 1, 2

Richardson Road (Distillery visitors' house). As manager's

house with additional pair rear entrances in outer bays.

Community hall. Probably built later than other buildings

in distillery complex. Rectangular weather-boarded hall with

entrance porch in centre W gable with side entrances and

front window. 6 regular long windows above light long

N and S elevations; paired doors and small range of windows

light service end of building; multi-pane glazing; single

roof.

3-12a Richardson Road. Range of 4 pairs 2-storey houses

and 1 3-dwelling terrace. All harled with simulated ashlar

sandstone dressings and margins. Each house with centre

door masked by square projecting porch; 12-pane glazing;

end and ridge coped stacks; grey-green slate roofs.

Nos. 3-10; each pair of dwellings with projecting service

area at gable, with blind front wall lit by single oculus.

Nos. 5-8 have margined fenestration.

Nos. 11, 12, 12a. bipartites flank centre entrance. All

fenestration margined.

Principal entrance flanked by low rubble quadrants capped

with dark brown slate coping. pair round and pair square

rubble piers with similar caps; flanking pedestrian gates with

wooden gates.
