David Bryce (Edinburgh), 1868-9 for Junior Conservative Club; reconstructed internally Peddie and Kinnear 1871 for Scottish
Widows' Fund, alterations (balconies removed etc) and top
floor added 1958 by Walter, Underwood. 3-storey classical
commercial building with later attic. 5 x 9 bays. Polished
ashlar banded vermiculated rustication and voussoirs, droved
ashlar rear elevation. Modern shops in 4th to 9th bays from S
in Renfield Street; basement at West George Street with steps oversailing to entries; wide recessed basement windows;
windows mainly sash and case, plate glass; 3 sub-basement
windows with dwarf architraves in S bays to Renfield Street.
Ground floor windows on moulded corbelled cills; pilastered
entrance at No 112 and 114 West George Street. Glazed,
pilastraded, arched ground floor, blind above transomes;
sculpted heads on keyblocks.
5 x 3-bay corner section: ground floor dentil cornice; 1st
floor balustrade with panelled piers at each window; all 1st
floor windows aediculed with semi-engaged Corinthian columns, shell-motifs in tympana; alternate segmental and triangular
pediments. 2nd floor windows lugged architraves, corbelled
moulded cills; richly sculpted eaves frieze; dentil band;
projecting cornice; later attic. Detailing continues 1 bay
into West Regent Lane at N bay in Renfield Street.
