Description
Robert Hutchison, dated 1897. Free Renaissance
commercial building. 5 storeys and attic, 6-storey
corner tower; 2 asymmetrical bays to St Vincent Street,
3 bays to Hope Street. Red ashlar. All windows
mullioned, or mullioned and transomed. Entrance at
splayed angle flanked by 2 arched windows, all
pilastered; diminutive bipartites above also pilastered
and pedimented; bold sculpted corbel table above 1st
turning splay to circle; mullon and transom windows in
2nd, 3rd, 4th, 4th broken segmental pediments and
balconies; oval windows in carved frames in 5th; steep
conical roof with apex cupola. E bay to St Vincent
Street windows canted ground through 2nd storeys,
basket-arched 3rd, 4-light window 4th above, elaborate
stepped gable; detail continued to Hope Street except
canted oriel window above ground floor to 2nd and gables
flanking centre. Additional entrance in W narrow bay St
Vincent Street. Steep Westmoreland slate roof with red
tile ridge; tall corniced and panelled stacks. Curved
bay to St Vincent Lane, corbelled to octagonal at 4th.
Bell-cast green slate roof.
