W W Robertson architect, 1885. 3-storey attic and basement
office building with Renaissance details and French Roofs.
Symmetrical 5-bay elevation to George Street, asymmetrical
6-bay elevation to North Frederick Street, both similarly
detailed. Polished ashlar, rusticated and channelled to ground.
GEORGE STREET ELEVATION: shallow advanced end bays with French
pavilion roofs flank central wider entrance bay with tripartite openings. All ground floor openings round-arched. Doorway
tripartite with flanking sidelights, all round-arched with
pilasters supporting moulded archivolts. Door square headed
with recessed double-leaf panelled doors, round-arched tympanum
with heraldic crest. Above door, bracketted balustraded balcony.
Ground floor windows single light with recessed reveals and
decorative console keystones. Outer 2 bays have single light
windows, tripartite to centre, all architraved above ground,
consoled pediments to 1st. All sash and case with plate-glass
glazing to ground, 4-pane to upper floor.
Continuous balustraded blind balcony to 1st. Giant
pilasters link 2nd and 3rd floors at angles of advanced bays.
Heavy mutuled cornice, balustraded parapet with die piers
supporting urns. To end bays tall French roofs with round-headed dormers, to centre bay bipartite dormers. Slate roofs, cast-iron cresting to pavilion roofs, tall corniced axial stacks.
NORTH FREDERICK STREET ELEVATION: angled bay to SW corner,
6-bay asymmetrical elevation shallow recessed off-centre
narrow bay with round-arched door. Otherwise details as above
except 3 N bays to 3rd floor have bipartites.
