Probably Colin Menzies, dated 1925. 4-storey and attic
modern movement warehouse of 5 symmetrical bays. Black
bricks at ground, red bricks above in polychrome effect
with sandstone lintels, keystones and mutuled cornice.
Jambs and arches of each recessed bay piped with
contrasting chamfered brick above ground floor. Windows
recessed with pilasters to ground and giant pilaster strips
1st and 3rd; segmentally headed bays; segmentally arched
windows at ground, with moulded cornice above.
Keystones to all windows, grander and doubling as eaves
brackets to 4th floor. Glazed, 5-bay mansard attic crowned
with appropriately simple railings.
Statement of Special Interest
The probable attribution to Menzies rests on his work for
McCorquodales Printers in 1925, covering the court within
their various premises, though the plans for the application
and plans for the fine brick facade are absent. The printers
works at 60-90 Howard Street and 90 Maxwell Street are
The warehouse was built as an extension to Nos 64-70 Howard Street. The combined buildings have been converted to commerical/residential use, with an additional storey and are now accessed from Howard Street.
