Description

Dated 1901. 3-storey and attic, 7-bay red sandstone building in free renaissance style, asymmetrical. Ground floor shops with modern shop fronts. At NE corner of frontage octagonal engaged bartizan corbelled from chamfered base. At 1st floor level this has small windows with lugged architraves and cornices. Frieze with moulded cornice between 1st and 2nd floors, with consoled platform below the 2nd floor windows; which have transoms, architraves and heavily moulded pediments. Moulded string course and cill course below parapet head, which has blind round headed window with keystoned drip moulds. Windows and frieze decorated with low relief sculpture. Turret roof has projecting eaves, prominent bellcast and lead finials.

At 1st floor, to W of turret windows are round headed with moulded and keystoned heads, in pairs separated by pilasters. Each pair of windows separated from its neighbour by pilaster running full height of storey. End pairs have narrow pilasters separating individual windows. Centre bay has canted oriel at 2nd floor springing from same height as heads of 1st floor windows which are more widely separated than in other bays, moulded cill band.

Plain frieze and cornice separate 1st from 2nd floor. 2nd floor windows in E end bay are bipartite, mullioned and transomed, in next 2 bays paired windows with chamfered reveals. In centre bay canted oriel with transoms (centre window bipartite). Three western bays have tripartite mullioed and transomed windows with 3 compartment panelling below. Bays separated by pilasters in line with those below. Cill course. Heavy cornice and parapet centre and bays have at attic level shaped gables, end ones with ogee skews, pediment and architraved oculi. Centre gable has semi-circular head with low relief sculpture below and flanking urns. Windows, except where mullioned and transomed are sash and case, with multipane heads. End gables plain, sneclked rubble with chimney stacks. That at W end has frieze and cornice; that at E has been cut down.

Statement of Special Interest

The grandest commercial building in Galston, comparable in style and scale with the best commercial building of the period in Ayrshire.
