Description

Early 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bays symmetrical house with centre door; gable end to street. Squared and coursed tooled rubble and painted tooled margins. 1st floor windows set below eaves. Predominantly 4-pane timber sash and case windows. Pitched, slate roof; straight skews. Coped end stacks with clay cans.

Statement of Special Interest

The southern end of Urquhart Street is a good example of the traditional street pattern of Moray and coastal Scotland, with buildings orientated with a gable facing the street. The design of these buildings, particularly their plan form, exterior profile and window disposition, are characteristic of early 19th century Scottish burgh architecture and building methods. Some of Forres is a well-preserved example of medieval burgh settlement pattern, characterised by a principal road with long narrow plots, or rigs, extending to the rear on either side. Plots were historically developed with closely knit housing accessed by narrow wynds and closes. As illustrated in Wood's plan (1823), Urquhart Street is one of three wynds which was laid out to improve access from Forres' High Street to the south, and therefore is an important surviving example of the early street pattern of this historic burgh.

The census records indicate that 21 Urquhart Street was previously two separate dwellings which have been merged to form a single property. The property forms part of a group of traditional buildings at the southern end of Urquhart Street. Group consisting of 17 Urquhart Street, 18 Urquhart Street, 20A Urquhart Street, 20B Urquhart Street, 21 Urquhart Street, 22 Urquhart Street, 22A Urquhart Street, 23 Urquhart Street, 24A Urquhart Street, 24B Urquhart Street, 25 Urquhart Street and 26 Urquhart Street (see separate listings).
