Ross and Joass, 1861, possibly incorporting earlier work.
Long 2-storey rectangular barn with livestock accommodation
in ground floor and storage in 1st floor; north gable linked
to sloping site by short bridge giving access to 1st floor
entrance. Long, lower single storey 5- and 6-bay ranges
extend east and west, the 5-bays to east converted to 3
holiday accommodation units circa 1980. All pinned grey
rubble with tooled grey granite dressings. Centre barn range
displays random rubble masonry at ground floor of east
elevation, where lean-to extension has recently been removed.
Segmental headed entrance in centre of long east elevation.
North gable has tall pointed-headed 1st floor entrance with
double leaf plank doors with long iron hinges. South gable
with centre ground floor entrance to stock accommodation,
with long loft door immediately above and gablet quatrefoil
vent. Louvred window with shallow pointed-head in centre of
east elevation 1st floor, mirrored at west.
6-bay single storey stable wing extends west, terminating in
outer gabled bay with pointed headed carriage house entrance,
also with double leaf plank doors and long iron hinges. 5-bay
east range as 3 dwellings, with windows and doors in enlarged
openings both north and south, and with 3 entrances in
north elevation, each under slated canopied porch extending
from roof line.
Multi-pane glazing; modern skylights to residential
wing, some original triangular louvred vents survive at
west; slate roofs.
Statement of Special Interest
Originally served Glenfinnan Lodge, seat of the Macdonalds of Glenaladale and heirs until mid 20th century. Rectangular
steadings with stock/stable accommodation in ground floor
and threshing barn store in 1st floor with direct access
to lane or ramp are individual to Lochaber District.
Interior of barn now empty of threshing machinery, which
was motivated by water wheel at west elevation, now also
removed.
