Description

Rear part 2-storey basement and attic harled, mid 18th

century. Good original hall and stair joinery, very fine 1st

floor drawing room (now bedroom) rococo chimneypiece with

painted over-mantel, doorcases with pulvinated friezes,

pediments and painted tympana. Taller and wider front (W)

block added c. 1817-18, 2-storey and basement stuccoed and

whitewashed to front with plain parapet, piend roof. Slightly

advanced centre section 1-window flanked by narrow dummies

with higher parapet and twin chimneys, porch c. 1890

replacing 4-column plain doric one; 2-window either side.

Simple classic interior.

Statement of Special Interest

Although the house was extended and altered c. 1817-18, and

again c. 1890 this group is of special interest for the

completeness of the mid 18th century layout of gardens

outbuildings gates, lodges and farm offices. The interior work

of c. 1817-18 is closely similar in detail to that at Castle

Forbes but whether by Simpson who began that house or Smith

who finished it is hard to guess.
