Description

Robert Reid and William Sibbald, 1802. 4-storey and basement, 4-bay terraced tenement. Broached ashlar sandstone. Band course at principal and 1st floors; cill course at 1st and 2nd floors; cornice at 2nd floor; cornice and blocking course at 3rd floor. Entrance platt and steps oversailing basement.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: pair of 2-bay pilastered, corniced and consoled shop fronts; shop front to right comprising panelled door with plate glass rectangular fanlight, plate glass window; shop front to left comprising recessed glazed door, plate glass window. Regular fenestration in bays to floors above, with blind windows in penultimate bay to right, at 1st and 2nd floors.

N (NORTHUMBERLAND STREET) ELEVATION: 4-storey and basement, 7-bay elevation, becoming 72-76, even Nos, Northumberland Street; comprising round-arched doorpiece to outer left at principal floor, with 6-panel timber common stair door and blind semicircular fanlight; regular fenestration in remaining bays at principal floor and to floors above and basement, with blind windows in 3rd bay from left to all floors above basement, except at 3rd floor, 3rd bay from right at principal floor, penultimate bay from right at all floors above basement, outer right at 1st and 2nd floors, 4th bay from left and penultimate bay to left at 3rd floor. Flagged basement area.

S ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (15 and 17 Howe Street).

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate M-roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Random rubble and rendered ridge stacks, shouldered wallhead stack; coped, with circular cans. Coped skews.

Part of the Second New Town A Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
