Roofless, otherwise fairly entire. Original L-plan 49' x 53' keep 1374, walls of inner court 130' x 90' dated 1427.
Original L-plan nucleus extended to large U-plan mansion ground and top floors. within walls of inner court, and extensive outer court and gardens with dovecot tower at SW angle constructed.
Statement of Special Interest
Guardianship Monument. Original tower built by Sir Simon Preston. Often occupied by the Stuart monarchs. Burnt 1543 and restored thereafter. Passed into the hands of the Gilmours in the 17th century.
