Description
Mid 18th century. 3-storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan farmhouse with early 19th century additions at rear. Built on slightly falling ground to E. Harled rubble with ashlar sandstone margins and dressings. Stugged quoins. Chamfered reveals. 2nd floor windows directly under eaves.
W elevation: near-symmetrical, widely spaced bays. Door at centre ground with early 19th century sandstone ashlar, corniced and pilastered doorpiece framing segmental-arch. Deep-set 4-panelled door with Edinburgh handle, upper corners masked by arch. Oculus to right of door, small window to left. Evidence of blocked opening immediately to right of door. Windows directly above at 1st and 2nd floor. Windows near-symmetrically disposed in outer bays; 1st and 2nd floor windows blind, painted as other windows, high, coped wallhead stacks rise directly above 2nd floor windows; blocked opening between centre and outer right window. Larger window to ground outer left, (modern 4-pane top-hopper window), evidence of blocked opening to left. Stugged, sandstone buttress with slab coping to outer right, almost to level of 2nd floor cill.
N elevation: M-gable, left gable lower. Gable of main house to right, blocked opening at ground, windows at 1st and 2nd floor. Lower blank gable to left, blocked opening at ground right, modern flue and heating equipment. Single storey, lean-to rubble sheds with pantiled roofs to E against N garden wall.
E elevation: full-height, half-piended roofed projection off-centre to right, landing window on E elevation, window at ground left return. Lower, lean-to gable to outer right, glazed door at ground S, window at 1st floor. Near-symmetrical arrangment of windows in 2 bays to left, those in outer left bay larger, that at principal floor largest. Windows of penultimate bay immediately to left of jamb, ground floor window not in line with windows of upper floors.
S elevation: gable, windows off-centre at principal and 2nd floor, upper window smaller.
4-pane plate glass sash and case windows; 12-pane sash and case for rear projection. Grey slate, gabled roof. Tall, rubble coped wallhead stacks at W elevation, squared coped apex stack at S and N, brick apex stack on lower N gable. Ashlar coping to skews.
Interior: not seen November 1992.
Boundary wall: high rubble wall with slab coping encloses garden and house to E and N.
