J Anderson Hamilton, dated 1865. Substantial 4-storey Baronial corner tenement with slender corner spire (replaced 1980?s) and shops at ground floor. Cream sandstone, polished ashlar ground floor, squared and snecked rubble with polished and stugged ashlar dressings above and to rear. Base course; string courses above ground, 1st and 2nd floor stepping over features and irregular openings; ground floor openings with roll-moulded reveals, stop-chamfered reveals above; ground and 1st floor openings segmental-arched; 3rd floor windows breaking eaves in gableheads; ashlar mullions;

W (SHORE) ELEVATION: 2-bay with curved corner bay to right; doorway in curved corner bay, broad shop window and rectangular window to left bay. Corner bay with single window at 1st floor; 2nd floor window with carved cresting to lintel and framed by corbelled projections rising to square corner tower with tripartite window and machicolated parapet at 3rd floor, corbelled corner bartizans with water spouts and cross-arrowslit windows, central clock face, tall octagonal spire with modern louvred bellcote and pyramidal cap. Bay to left with rectangular corbelled oriel with narrow sidelights off-centre to left at 1st floor, corbelled frieze and cornice; single window at 2nd floor; segmental-arched bipartite window at 3rd floor with crowstepped gable with fleur-de-lis finial and monogrammed pediment to gablehead.

S (BERNARD STREET) ELEVATION: 11-bay (excluding corner bay); centre bay broad moulded arch with paired shouldered-arch doorways (pend to right), Leith motto to tympanum; tall stepped tripartite stair window at 1st floor above with angled cills; tall segmental-arched stair window with central timber mullions and angled cill above framed by canon spouts and breaking eaves in French pavilion roof with triangular ventilators. 2 bays to left with doorways at ground floor; single windows above; 3rd floor windows with 1 bargeboarded and 1 crowstepped gable with thistle finial and blank armorial panel. Next bay shop window at ground floor; single window at 1st floor with stepped hoodmould; ashlar wallhead stack corbelled at 2nd floor with Leith motto in recessed panel, shouldered above eaves with barley-sugar nook-shafts to stack. Outer bays with single windows at 1st and 2nd floor; at 3rd floor bipartite window to left with crowstepped and finialled gable with monogrammed pediment to gablehead; to right crowstepped dormerhead with thistle finial. Bay to right of centre with shop window at ground floor; bipartite windows above, segmental-arched at 3rd floor with rolled detail to gable skews, carved pointed-arched panel to gablehead. Next bay with single windows and bargeboarded dormerhead with kingpost. To right, doorway at ground floor; shouldered ashlar wallhead stack above rising from griffin corbels framing monogram, date at 2nd floor, corbelled at 3rd floor with deep-set segmental-arched window with monogram and hoodmould above, grooved stack with spiral nook-shafts. Bay to right with single windows and bargeboarded dormerhead with kingpost. Bay to outer right with bipartite windows; segmental-arched at 3rd floor with rolled detail and carved pointed-arch panel to gablehead.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: crowstepped gabled bay with apex stack to outer right; single windows with 3rd floor windows breaking eaves in gabled dormerheads; tall rendered wallhead stacks between dormerheads.

Shop windows glazed with round-arched timber bipartites with roundel in spandrels; timber sash and case windows with thin astragals, mostly 4-pane lower sashes, 2-pane upper sashes, some plate glass glazing, 8-pane windows to rear. Slate roof with metal flashings; 7 wallhead stacks, apex stack (see above), mutual stack. Corbelled skewputts, some gabletted; ashlar skews, some saw-tooth, crowstepped or with roll-detail (see above). Moulded eaves gutters; gargoyle gutterheads; ornamental gutter brackets.

INTERIOR: not seen 1993.
