Description
William Stirling, 1826 with later additions. Single and 2-storey, 3-bay, irregular plan, Tudor style, gabled lodge with 3 prominent, tall octagonal stacks to centre. Red ashlar sandstone painted red. Base course, chamfered parapet eaves course. Hoodmoulds and chamfered reveals to windows. Bracketted skewputts.
S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: slightly advanced, open porch to centre, clasped diagonal buttress to right, modern glazed door. Single bay to right with narrow window, Advanced gabled bay to left, advanced canted window to centre.
N (REAR) ELEVATION: advanced, flat-roofed bays to outer left and centre with crenellated parapets, gable breaking eaves to rear. 2-storey gable end to right with single storey, advanced gabled bay abutting to centre.
E (SIDE) ELEVATION: gable end to left, stone-mullioned, bipartite window, slightly advanced flat-roofed bay to right, embattled parapet, bipartite window.
W (SIDE) ELEVATION: blind gable end, small window to bay to left. Section of flat-roofed block to rear abutting to NW corner, linking to gable end of 2-storey, 3-bay later addition.
Multi-pane casement windows. Grey slates, lead flashing. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: (seen 2002). Plain interior recently renovated.
GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALL: octagonal, red ashlar sandstone, columns on plinths, moulded cornice, gableted caps. Bowed sections of wall in red ashlar and saddle-back coping flanking piers, terminating in plain outer piers; wall continues to right in random rubble.
Statement of Special Interest
William Stirling (1772-1838) was born in Dunblane and later built Holmehill House (demolished) as his own residence in the Tudor or Jacobean style of James Gillespie Graham and William Burn, similar to Cambusnethan House (see separate listing).
