Built probably 3rd quarter of 18th century. House in which
Robert Burns lived from 1793 until his death, 1796.
Renovated by M Purdon Smith 1935. 2 storeys. Near
symmetrical, with 3 bays, central door, 2 ground floor
windows in left bay. Red sandstone rubble (render removed
by Smith) with ashlar margins (S gable now harled);
intermittent contrasting boulder rubble base course.
Small-paned sash windows throughout. Straight skews;
end stacks; slate roof. Plain interior, with stone
stairs; simple chimney pieces.
Statement of Special Interest
Now a museum. Irregular stonework patterns may indicate more
than one building phase.
