Description

W W Friskin (Allan and Friskin) 1929-30. 1 and 2-storey schools, brick-built with patterned brick panels and some concrete details. SECONDARY SCHOOL: 2-stroey. Symmetrical Science and Technical departments front Lawton Road. Central recessed entrance bay with pedimented gable. 7-bay classrooms to each side, pilaster piers with concrete lotus bud capitals and entablature. 3-bay ends. Link between Lawton Road block and Main Entrance by Assembly Hall has similar pilaster piers to N, classroom, elevation: corridors and flat-roofed Administration block and gabletted round-headed stair window to S elevation. Assembly Hall projects from N elevation, single-storey 7-bay with large windows. Stepped chimney stalk at junction of hall and entrance foyer. Classrooms to W arrange around polygonal courtyard, corridors to courtyard elevation.

PRIMARY SCHOOL TO S: long single storey oblique-angled S elevation with central 2-storey administration building. Gabletted entrance at N with brick chimney stalk beside short square-plan hall. Flat-roofed corridor to N elevation.

Piended and platformed swept slate roofs to classrooms and halls. Flat concrete roofs to corridors. Windows sash and case with vertical astragals.

INTERIORS: Coloured tiled vestibule at main entrance of Secondary school with terrazzo floor and mosaic "fish pond" centrepiece. Corridor plan with borrowed lights to outward-facing classrooms. Art deco proscenium in Assembly Hall.

JANITORS HOUSES 1-storey and attic with gable ends to Lawton Road. N house ground floor canted window with round-arched gablet dormerhead over. Piended roof with central stack. Door to side with 3 square lights below eaves. S house similar but gabled with canted bay through both floors and side porch.

Low boundary walls, brick with concret coping. Steel railings. Concrete art deco fins to main gatepiers. Ornate gates, roundel depicting ships and aeroplanes.
