Description

Later 19th century. 2-storey, with 1st floor breaking eaves, mirrored pair of 3-bay houses (No 55 to left, No 57 to right), linked by single-storey bays. W elevation stugged squared and snecked masonry (No 57 stone cleaned), N and S elevations rubble; ashlar dressings. Base course. Segmental-headed windows and doorways. Chamfered reveals, stop-chamfered before cill.

W (BONNYRIGG ROAD) ELEVATION: No 55: doorway at centre, with raised margin, cornice and angled tablet; panelled door and 2-pane fanlight. Canted window in bay to left, with cornice and blocking course. Bipartite window in advanced panel in bay to right, with cornice and blocking course. Gabled dormerheads to windows at 1st floor, with kneelers, bracketted skewputts and finials. Window to single storey linking bay, slightly recessed to right.

No 57: mirror image of No 55, with canted window in bay to right, and advanced panel in bay to left; window in screen wall to left.

N ELEVATION, No 55: blank.

S ELEVATION, No 57: blank.

4-pane glazing pattern in sash and case windows to No 55; uPVC glazing to No 57. Coped skews carried across gablehead. Gablehead stacks. Purple slates. Moulded eaves gutter. Original cans.

Statement of Special Interest

Listed, despite glazing alterations to No 57, as an interesting pair of mirrored later 19th century villas. They are grouped with Nos 51 and 53 Bonnyrigg Road (see separate listing).
