Summary

Description

Dated 1884. 2-storey asymmetrical villa. Stugged squared and snecked masonry; ashlar dressings. Base course. Chamfered reveals, stop- chamfered before chamfered cills.

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 3-bay. Consoled and corniced doorpiece at centre; bolection moulded doorway with raised surround; panelled door and plate glass fanlight; iron bell-pull to right; pierced blocking course above, with 2 ball finials, forming apron to window at 1st floor. Bipartite window at ground and 1st floors in bay to right; gabled dormer window above, with finial. Large arrowslit at ground and 1st floor in asymmetrically gabled bay to left; moulded course stepped over moulded panel between floors, course continuous with oriel window to left and cornice of doorpiece to right.

S ELEVATION: 2-bay with chamfered corner bay to right. Window at ground on chamfered angle; turreted tripartite oriel window at 1st floor, with machicolated eaves course, moulded eaves gutter, conical roof and iron finial. Corniced advanced tripartite window at ground at centre with windows on return; pierced parapet above, with 2 ball finials; tripartite window at 1st floor; flattened-gabled dormer window above with stepped tripartite window, segmental-arched lights. Gabled bay to left, with finial; corniced canted window at ground, with half- piend and platform roof, fishscale slates and brattishing; tripartite window at 1st floor; hoodmould above stepped over moulded panel inscribed "1884"; window in gablehead.

W ELEVATION: M-gabled. Left gable: window to right at ground; window to left and right at 1st floor, window to right etched with coloured border; single-storey gabled service wing adjoined to left, with window to gabled bay to S. Right gable: lean-to glass-house adjoined at ground; glazed door to right inside.

N (ANCRUM ROAD) ELEVATION: 3-bay. Bay at centre raised to square tower, with fishscale slates and iron finial; leaded tripartite stair window between ground and 1st floors; further leaded stair window above; moulded panel above. Asymmetrically gabled bay to left; intercepted window to right at ground; window to left at 1st floor. Window at ground and 1st floor in bay to right; gabled dormer window above. Rendered and lined addition adjoined to left and centre at ground; door to E and 2 windows to N. Gabled single-storey service wing adjoined to right; door at centre, flanked by 2 windows to left and coal hatch and boarded door to right to N; gablehead stack to gabled bay to left to W.

Plate glass glazing pattern in sash and case windows; patterned leaded glass in window at ground in bay to right to E. Overhanging eaves. Coped gablehead stacks to E, W and N. Original rainwater goods.

BOUNDARY WALLS: semicircular coped rubble wall; 3 pyramidal-capped corniced chamfered square piers.

This building is called St Helen's on the OS Map 1892-93.
