Description

1865. 2-storey, 3-bay symmetrical classical house of rectangular plan. Polished ashlar principal (Argyll Street) elevation. Roughcast rear and side elevations with droved ashlar dressings. Base course, cornice and blocking course at eaves with raised centre and terminal dies.

NE ELEVATION: architraved windows, with lugged lintels and projecting cills, pediments above at ground floor. Centre bay slightly advanced, pilastered doorpiece with cornice and blocking course above bearing carved garland.

SW (REAR) ELEVATION: margins at corners, margins and projecting cills at windows. Centre bay slightly advanced, door at ground floor off-set to left masked by modern lean-to conservatory, tall stair window above. Slightly wider window at ground floor bay to left.

NW ELEVATION: single window at 1st floor centre bay.

SE ELEVATION: single window at 1st floor to outer right.

Timber sash and case windows, 12-pane to most openings except for 24-pane to stair and 16-pane at ground floor to left. Vertically-panelled timber entrance door with 3-pane fanlight above, panelled inner entrance door with etched glass upper. Grey slate piended and bell-cast roof with cast-iron gutters and downpipes. Ashlar 4-flue wallhead stacks centring side elevations with machicolated copes, circular and octagonal cans.

BOUNDARY WALLS: rendered and coped walls flanking house, terminated at outer corners by square ashlar piers with shallow pyramidal caps. Random rubble boundary wall to rear and side of garden.

Statement of Special Interest

The burgh plan of 1868 marks Kirklea as the United Presbyterian Manse. This is a good quality house retaining most of its original details.
