Description

Early 19th century. Single storey, 3-bay classical villa with later 19th century single bay square wing projecting to W, and kitchen wing projecting from centre of rear elevation. Roughcast walls with ashlar dressings. Base course, lintel course and cornice at eaves with blocking course at principal elevation. Raised margins at corners, stacks and windows (with projecting cills).

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: stone steps to pilastered doorpiece entablature above with tablet breaking blocking course and bearing arms and inscription "Manu Fort". Later wing projecting to left with bipartite window at centre and single window centring W (return) elevation. Modern lean-to garage to right.

Variety of timber sash and case windows of plate glass, 4, 6, and 12-pane patterns. Grey slate piended roof to principal block and side wing, gabled rear wing with purple slates. Large rendered wallhead stacks to principal block with octagonal cans, 2-flue apex stacks with circular cans at rear wings.

INTERIOR: dismantled, except for cupboard door with fielded panelling in S wall, and panelled reveals at doorway to later wing.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATEPIERS: random rubble boundary walls with ashlar cope to Low Askomil. Snecked ashlar gatepiers to SW, corniced, with domed caps and modern steel gates.

OUTBUILDING: 2-storey rendered outbuilding with stores at ground floor and stone stair with iron handrail accessing upper floor. Slate gabled roof with apex stack.

Statement of Special Interest

Previously known as Seaside Cottage, this is a handsome villa which, despite the later additions, remains essentially unaltered externally. It was rebuilt internally in the early 1950?s after sustaining bomb damage in 1944. Although it was rebuilt with inferior internal specifications, some fittings remain in storage (1995) after recent stripping out due to rot.
