Description

Early to mid 18th century; extended to rear later 20th century. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay, rectangular-plan house with single storey and raised basement wing, on ground falling to W. Rubble with large roughly squared red sandstone quoins. Doorpiece with moulded arris and incised lintel.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: symmetrical. 2-leaf panelled timber door with lintel inscribed '17 TW (3 interlocking hearts) 'G '9' to centre at ground, windows in flanking bays (that to left widened) and damaged mounting block/steps at outer left angle; regular fenestration to 1st floor and 3 regularly-disposed modern rooflights above. Lower set-back bay to outer right with 2 small windows to basement floor, stone forestair in re-entrant angle leading to boarded timber door at left and window to right.

W (PARKHILL ROAD) ELEVATION: tall gabled elevation with single window to left at 1st floor and 2 tiny attic windows in gablehead.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: single window immediately to right of centre at ground and to centre at 1st floor, small traditional rooflight above and low flat-roofed extension projecting at left.

E ELEVATION: gabled elevation with small blocked window to left.

4-, 6-, 12-pane and plate glass glazing patterns all in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Out of character Velux rooflights. Coped ashlar and rubble stacks (that to E of 2-storey part rebuilt) with cans and thackstanes; broad ashlar-coped skews to 2-storey bays.

BOUNDARY WALLS: coped rubble boundary walls.

Statement of Special Interest

The former inn was limewashed when originally listed in 1977, and retained a tethering ring at the mounting block/steps.
