Description

Later 19th century. Single storey, 2-bay estate cottage. Squared and snecked sandstone.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: steps to advanced gabled entrance; kneelered gablet with square plaque within; timber door; kneelered gabled bay to right; stone-roofed canted bay; plaque to gablehead.

W (DOONFOOT ROAD) ELEVATION: shallow advanced 2-light window within gabled bay; crenellated parapet above; arrowslit opening at gablehead. Single narrow window to return of recessed gabled bay to left; narrow opening to entrance porch, recessed to right.

N AND E ELEVATIONS: not seen 1999.

Modern glazing. Slate roof; gablehead and pitch stacks; circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

GATEPIERS, GATES, RAILINGS AND BOUNDARY WALL: square-plan stone gatepiers; 2-leaf and single iron gates; coped convex wing wall with iron railings atop.

Statement of Special Interest

B-Group with South Lodge, South Lodge Bridge crossing Slaphouse Burn, Belleisle House Hotel, Greenhouse and Walled Garden (see separate listings). Similar to Belleisle, South Lodge (see separate list description) with a reverse plan and differing treatment of roadside elevation. Notable for its stone-roofed canted bay, kneelered doorpiece and the retention of original gates, gatepiers, railings and boundary wall.

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.

We list buildings which are found to be of special architectural or historic interest using the selection guidance published in Designation Policy and Selection Guidance (2019)
