Description

Robert Gordon Wilson, 1901. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay villa. Tooled coursed grey granite, with contrasting light grey long and short dressings, finely finished to margins of S elevation; granite rubble to remainder. Base course; dividing string course; overhanging eaves; timber bargeboards.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; chamfered doorway reached by stone steps to centre bay at ground floor, 2-leaf panelled timber door, 3-pane fanlight, window to centre of 1st floor above; tripartite windows to ground and 1st floors of flanking bay to right, piend-roofed tripartite dormer to attic floor. Gabled bay slightly advanced to bay to left, 5-light canted window to centre of ground floor, parapet forming balcony to 1st floor, tripartite window to 1st floor and attic floor, projecting cill to attic window, supported on granite brackets.

E ELEVATION: asymmetrical; gabled bay to left, stone steps to centre, leading to doorway of 18A Rubislaw Den South; irregular fenestration to remainder.

N ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 2-storey gabled wing adjoining to left, doorway near centre, flanked by small window to left, irregular fenestration to left and right returns; window to ground floor of centre bay, round-arched window to 1st floor above; 3-light canted window with piended roof to ground floor of bay to right, tripartite window to 1st floor; modern skylights to attic floor.

W ELEVATION: asymmetrical; gabled to right, single window to right of ground floor.

Predominantly timber sash and case windows with small-pane upper sashes. Piended and gabled grey slate roof with lead ridges. Coped gablehead stacks with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIORS: not seen 2000.

GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps to S, low coped granite wall between; granite and brick coped rubble walls to remainder.

Statement of Special Interest

B-Group with 20 and 22 Rubislaw Den South (see separate listings). From the beginning of the 19th century Aberdeen rapidly expanded westwards from Union Street. 18 Rubislaw Den South is part of the later 19th/early 20th century development W of Queen's Cross. Rubislaw Den South runs almost parallel to Queen's Road (on the site of Skene Road) which was originally surrounded by the estate of Rubislaw. In 1877 Rubislaw Estate was bought by the City of Aberdeen Land Association, who re-aligned Skene Road and sold off the estate in smaller plots. Streets became wider and villas with substantial gardens often replaced terraces. Prestigious architects, such as Robert Gordon Wilson, were often employed to produce bold and unusual designs to reflect the wealth and individuality of the clients.
