Description

Late 19th century. 11 bay, 3-storey, symmetrical school (Jacobean) U-plan with main hall occupying south side of interior of U. 2-storey wings contain large art rooms. Stugged and snecked masonry. Stringcourses, ball finials, crowstepped gables. Bipartite and tripartite, mullioneda nd transomed, hoodmoulded windows. Roof slated.

SOUTH ELEVATION: 9-bay block flanked by recessed broad, single bay gabled wings. Centre block - Centre 3 bays gabled and slightly advanced. Double stringcourses, the upper one hoodmoulded, divide 2nd and 3rd storey. 3rd storey has tripartite arrangement to centre - 2 windows with panel between inscribed FAULDHOUSE SCHOOL. Moulded cornice with parapet with moulded cope, roundel in gablet inscribed WHITBURN PARISH SCHOOL BOARD. Gable with coping, skews and thistle finial at apex. Outer bays have bipartite window followed by single window, entrance on outer ground floor bay at each side. Deep parapet, raised slightly at corners. Ground floor of re-entrant wall advanced with stone set-off, single window to each storey. Wings are identical - Tripartite window to centre, double stringcourse, upper one hoodmoulded. Larger 2nd floor tripartite windowwith segmental hoodmould. Both windows transomed. Ventilation slit, crowstepped gable with ball finial.

W ELEVATION: Centre crowstepped gable slightly advanced. 2 bipartite windows to centre. Flanking bay to left has single bipartite window on both floors, breaking eaves on 2nd floor as dormerhead gablet. Right side has single storey advanced entrance block with deep parapet and slate roof, door in the re-entrant and 3 windows on the west elevation. 2nd floor of main building to right has single window and tripartite window breaking eaves as dormerhead gablet in outer bay. All windows transomed,

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: Almost identical to W except grouping of windows on entrance block and 2nd floor of main building. central advanced crowstepped gable flanked by single window to left and to immediate right a bipartite window breaking eaves as dormerhead gablet.

NORTH ELEVATION: 5-bay centre has 3 bipartite windows to each floor all with transomes and single door in outer bay with glazed head.

Re-entrant angle of west side has single tripartite window on ground floor, on east side bipartite window with dormerhead gablet. Gabled ends plain with 2 windows to each, asymmetrically placed. Tall slated roofs. central lead ventilator truncated.

INTERIOR - main hall. Large hall with parquet floor and wagoan roof wth decorated king post trusses. Blank oculus in west end wall.
