Description

cruciform-plan range of single-storet rubble-built smiddy buildings,given present form in later 19th century,but incorporating earlier,late 18th century build.most unaltered sections fronting road to E:E-W longitudinal range and N wing of cross-arm of later 19th century date;S wing of cross-arm of later 19th century date;S wing,late 18th century. earlier S wing:(left of front):only recognisable part of earlier building:slated roof,part patched with corrugated iron;low,broad gable to S;no skews,roughly-squared quoins,tailing off into rubble.asymmetrical openings close to ground:small square window at ground to left in S gable;window at ground,E elevation;tiny opening off-centre in W elevation.e-w orientated tange and N wing:probably circa 1870,with disinctive extruded brick detailing to segmental-arched openings and in gable apices (brick cross detail in E,road-facing gable;brick relieving arches and margins to small segmental opening in gable apex of N gable);rubble with tooled and squared long and short quoins;broad?concrete skews and corrugated iron roof.E-W range:advanced gable fronting road,extending behind cross-arm for 5 bays (2 and 3,crss-wall between),truncated at W end and where modern extension links to single-storey and attic house.S elevation:2 windows in E (right) section (original hopper glazing);3 bays,left,door to right.N elevation:2 windows in W section.all concrete lintels.N range:segmental (brick detail) door to left on N elevation,single window to right;N elevation blind except brick-detailed apex window;W return elevation has single square window (modern glazing).plain single-storey and attic house at W of smiddy range probably later 19th century with modern alterations:end stacks (E rebuilt in brick);modern concrete lean-to addition at front (S),left of door;2 dormer-headed windows to rear (N).

range formerly extending N from W wall now demolished (replaced by modern,1990 house).said to date to 1777,formerly known as cotterton.
