Description

Early 19th century with later alterations. 2-storey, 5-bay T-plan asymmetrical mill with slightly raised kiln at E end and undershot water wheel at W. Harl-pointed rubble. Long and short quoins to kiln.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: deep-set boarded door in bay offset to right of centre; small window flanking to each side. Window at each floor in bay to left of centre. Round-arched, former wheel arch (now blocked) to outer left. Window at each floor in bay to right. Window at 1st floor to kiln bay to outer right.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: single storey, 2-bay projection from bay to centre. Remnant walls of lean-to in front of blank gabled bay with tall gablehead stack above; boarded door with window flanking in left return; small window, offset to left, in right return. Window at 1st floor in bay to right of centre. Round-arched wheel arch (now blocked) in bay to outer right. Boarded door in bay to left. Window at 1st floor of kiln bay to outer left.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: undershot wheel with rubble retaining wall at base of gabled elevation; small square opening at base of screen wall shielding wheel; window to gablehead above; small ventilation hole to left of gablehead.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: small opening at 1st floor below block-finialled gablehead.

Fixed, timber-framed windows. Stone slate roof; corrugated-iron roof to N projection; stone ridge; stone skews; tall, corniced stack with hexagonal, corniced extension to N.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1997.

BOUNDARY WALL AND LADE: curved, rubble coped wall from S elevation, bordering bridge to S. Concrete lade directing water to wheel from N.

Statement of Special Interest

The tall blocked arches mark the position of the original wheel before it was placed on the outside of the end wall. 3 pairs of stones were driven by a high-breast wheel about 4.3m in diameter and, in order that the movement of the wheel did not startle horses passing over the adjacent bridge, it was shielded by a screen wall. No longer in use.
