Description

Alexander Laing, 1804. Ruin. Gothick, single-storey brick-sized rough ashlar with cherry cocking.

Statement of Special Interest

Henry Hervert's letter book does not directly name Laing for specific buildings on the Invermay estate, though there is considerable detail about the progress of the work in the letters to Col. Hepburn Belshes, the owner. The reference to Laing comes in two letters of 1802 to James Home W.S. Merchant Street, Edinburgh instructing him to tell Mr. Laing to get a mason (26 June) and then (5 July) 'Col. Hepburn Belshes having this day engaged a mason orders me to give you this early information to prevent Mr. Laing's giving himself any further trouble about engaging one'.

The previous listed building record (written in 1981) described a verandah built with rustic log columns, 'Venetian' centre feature and pyramid thatched roof. This veranda was no longer extant in 2014.
