Summary

Description

The monument comprises a depopulated agricultural township of post-medieval date.

The township lies in improved grassland at around 140m OD. It consists of the remains of at least eleven houses, various outbuildings, including a corn-drying kiln and a possible small mill, together with several enclosed 'yards' and other field dykes. Cruck-slots survive in some of the buildings.

The settlement is on record as having existed from at least 1755 and it was abandoned by 1871. After its abandonment, the head-dyke which formerly surrounded the township's arable land was rebuilt, and the whole enclosure functioned (and continues to function) as sheep grazing.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains of the township as described and an area around them in which evidence relating to the construction and occupation of the site is likely to survive. It is irregular on plan, measuring a maximum of 210m NNW-SSE and 220m WNW-ESE, as marked in red on the accompanying map.

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of post-medieval rural settlement and economy.

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.
