Summary

Description

The monument comprises a dun of prehistoric date.

The monument lies at the N end of a wooded coastal promontory. It comprises an irregular-shaped dun known locally as Mungosdail Castle. The dun is relatively small, measuring approximately 9m NW-SE by about 6m transversely. The dun is defined by a ruined drystone wall, spread to between about 0.6m and 4m. The wall is best preserved on the S, where it stands to a height of about 2m in seven courses. There is a Z-shaped length of more recent walling partly overlying the dun wall on the SE.

Duns are fortified settlement sites of Iron Age date.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is circular with a diameter of 35m, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to an understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy.
