Summary

Description

The monument comprises the remains of a homestead and several ring-ditches of prehistoric date represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies in arable farmland at around 40m OD. It comprises a C-shaped enclosure ditch about 2m broad and 20m in overall diameter, within which is a ring-ditch some 12m in diameter. Cropmarks within the homestead indicate surviving internal remains. Immediately to the NE of the homestead is a ring-ditch some 12m in overall diameter, with an entrance on the SW.

The ditch is about 1.5m broad. There are potentially at least a further three ring-ditches, each about 10m in diameter, to the WSW and S of the homestead. There are a number of other cropmarks, including pits, which may be expected to represent the remains of associated features.

Ring-ditches such as these have been shown on excavation to represent the remains of former timber roundhouses of the later prehistoric period.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the visible remains and an area around them within which related material may be expected to survive. It is irregular in shape with maximum dimensions of 140m E-W by 125m N-S, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. It may be expected to contain material relating to the economy and environment of the site.
