Summary

Description

The monument comprises the remains of an enclosed settlement of prehistoric date represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.

The site lies on gently sloping arable farmland at around 100m OD, just over 1km SW of Traprain Law. The enclosure is defined by a single sub-circular ditch some 2-3m wide with an overall diameter of approximately 50m. Variations in crop conditions obscure the NE arc of the enclosure on the available photographs but a probable ditch terminal marking one side of an E-facing entrance is visible in this area. SE of the enclosure are a series of irregular curving ditches which may be artificial but are of uncertain function.

The monument belongs to an extensive group of enclosed settlements of various forms which concentrate in the area around Traprain Law, itself a major centre in the later prehistoric period.

The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is circular with a diameter of 110m as marked in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to add to our understanding of prehistoric settlement organisation and economy. Its association with the wider group of settlements centred around Traprain Law greatly enhances its importance.
