Description
This monument comprises the remains of an enclosed settlement of prehistoric date represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.
The site occupies an area of level ground above the Birns Water, with
an open outlook only from the NW to SW. It is oval in shape with
overall dimensions of approximately 90m E-W by 50m N-S. Its E
boundary may have been formed in part by the adjacent burn. The surrounding ditch is approximately 4-5m wide and no entrance is
apparent although part of the S circuit is not clearly visible and
this area may conceal an entrance. Within the enclosure is a
substantial annular ditch of which the W half is represented by a cropmark while the remainder lies under trees. This ditch is also approximately 4-5m wide and may represent part of a multiple
enclosure complex, an internal domestic building, or a
chronologically distinct phase of enclosure.
The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is irregular in shape with maximum dimensions of 150m NW-
SE by 120m as marked in red on the accompanying map.
