Summary

Description

The monument comprises the remains of a grass-covered broch. The monument was first scheduled in 1939 but an inadequate area was included to protect all of the archaeological remains. The present rescheduling rectifies this. The name has also been changed.

The monument is visible as a grass covered hillock approximately 30m in diameter and 2m in height. Small patches of visible stonework are evident on the lower slopes. The monument is partially bounded by a dry stone wall, though evidence for the monument extends to the NE into the adjacent field.

The area to be scheduled is irregular in shape, with maximum dimensions 43m NE-SE by 44m transversely, to include the broch and an area around in which evidence relating to its construction and use is likely to survive, as marked in red on the accompanying map. Above ground portions of walling and fencing are excluded from the scheduling to allow for maintenance.

Statement of National Importance

This monument is of national importance as the remains of an Iron Age broch which offers considerable potential to provide information on the nature of settlement and defensive architecture during this period of prehistory.
