Mid 19th century. 3-storey and attic 9-bay plain classical terraced block with shops built out at ground floor. Cream ashlar. Continuous cornice and blocking course above shops; shops to right have 19th century details; timber panelled door with plate glass fanlight in corniced and consoled surround to flats at centre. Regularly fenestrated above; windows in architraved surrounds. Moulded eaves cornice. Slated dormers to attic.

Plate glass in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Corniced ashlar stacks with circular cans.

Statement of Special Interest

On Kincaid's 1784 map Lothian Road is marked as 'New Road' and flanked by fields. A plan similar to what was built for this area, with a square to be known as Orchardfield Square where the Usher Hall now is, marked 'This square is not built but is intended,' is on Ainslie's 1804 map. The Merchant Company adopted William Burn's plan for the Grindlay's Orchardfield estate in 1820. Nos 37-55 Lothian Road were designed during the period when Thomas Hamilton was acting for the Merchant Company. The 1877 OS map shows this block (Lothian Road, Cambridge Street and Castle Terrace) complete.

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.
