Summary

Description

1846. Small U-plan courtyard steading incorporating cottage. Rubble (some squared) with heavily dressed quoins. Segmental-headed cart arches; carved detail; stone setts to courtyard. All doors of boarded timber unless stated.

SE ELEVATION: gabled bay of cottage to outer left with single window with carved putti head on lintel; pyramidally-coped, square gatepiers flanking wide courtyard opening immediately to right with screen wall beyond to right adjoining triple-gable range with variety of elements including windows in gableheads and sliding doors to centre and left gables

COURTYARD ELEVATION: 2-storey range to N with centre door and flanking windows to ground, hayloft opening with brick dormer pediment to centre above; W range with cartshed and granary to right with 2 cart arches below louvered openings and lower cottage to left with window in part-blocked cart arch to right and catslide roof to left with tiny window, door and further tiny window on return to right. Lower range to E with 2 sliding doors to left, door and adjoining window in part-blocked cart arch to right and further window to centre bay. Small brick tower projecting to outer right.

SW ELEVATION: 4-bay cottage to right with part-glazed timber door in bay to right of centre with small carved flower panels flanking doorhead and on lintel, bipartite window to left and single windows to outer bays. Taller range (cartshed and granary) to left with 3 louvered openings close to eaves.

NW ELEVATION: variety of elements including gabled bay to outer right with sliding timber door below hayloft opening, and lower lean-to bay projecting to left.

NE ELEVATION: lower range with window openings flanking blank centre.

4- and 12-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows; 6-pane top hoppers to courtyard; 3-pane vertically-astragalled fixed windows to outer bays of triple gable to SE; modern window to W of courtyard. Grey slates to cottage, corrugated iron/asbestos roofing elsewhere. Coped rubble and brick stacks; ashlar-coped skews and moulded skewputts. Setted courtyard.

Statement of Special Interest

Abden Farm was relocated to this site as a result of the proposed line of the Edinburgh & Northern railway. For some while the cottage was occupied by Charles Millar who carved the decorative panels detailed above, and also much of the stonework at Jenners, Edinburgh.
