Description
Dated 1928. Single storey U-plan school with hall projecting to N; Gibbsian details. Red brick, harled base course and with cream sandstone ashlar dressings and eaves course; diamond motifs in gableheads. Timber mullions transoms to bipartite and tripartite windows.
N RANGE WITH HALL:
N ELEVATION: near symmetrical. Gabled school hall projecting at centre with large keystoned, segmentally arched window to N, and dated circular panel in gablehead; square porch adjoined to W return with keystoned door in ashlar panel to N, with sunray fanlight; tall bipartite windows to hall on E and W returns. Gabled bays set in re-entrant angles, segmentally arched and keystoned to left bay, bipartite to right bay; bipasrtite and 2 single windows flanking; pedimented ashlar doorways set in re-entrant angles formed with slightly advanced outer bays, pilaster flanked; tall tripartite windows in outer bays, breaking eaves in gabled dormerheads and flanked by narrow windows. Flat-roofed square-plan projection to E return.
S ELEVATION: 10 symmetrical bay; gabled dormerheads to windows breaking eaves at centre and in penultimate bays (centre pair sharing gable, with voussoired clock in gablehead); flat-roofed dormerheads joining windows flanking centre.
W RANGE AND PAVILION: irregular elevation to W with windows breaking eaves in gableheads, detailed as above, 1 pair with further voussoired oculus; flat-roofed porch set in re-entrant angle formed with end pavilion. 5 windows to S elevation of pavilion, with penultimate windows breaking eaves in gabled dormerheads. Flat-roofed corridor-loggia to playground elevation with brick piers dividing bays and glazed timber in-fills; doors in end bays; clerestorey windows under eaves of main range.
E RANGE: irregular bays to E elevation, detailed similarly to W range, without porch or end pavilion. S elevation 3-bay with gabled dormerhead to centre window. Playground elevation with corridor-loggia detailed as above but terminated n penultimate bay to S with 2-leaf doors on S return.
Large-pane glazing pattern predominating in top-hopper windows with small-pane upper top-hoppers. Bell-cast roof with grey slates.
INTERIOR: original details retained; boarded dadoes; heated coat rails with radiators incorporated; enamel-tiled washroom with low sinks and brass taps; brass door fittings.
GATES, GATEPIERS AND RETAINING WALLS: decorative wrought-iron gates; 3 pairs of corniced ashlar gatepiers and low ashlar coped, harled rubble retaining walls to N.
SHELTERS: 2 3-bay gabled shelters with cast-iron columns and original iron roofs, abacking playground boundaries.
Statement of Special Interest
U-plan designed to trap sun and maximise ventilation, features aided by the corridor-loggias. It was possibly designed by John A Carfrae, who was responsible for several schools in East Lothian earlier this century.
