Description

John Keppie and A Graham Henderson, 1931. Modern

classical 4-storey bank on corner site with double-

height banking hall on ground floor. Polished ashlar;

with granite base; brick rear elevation. 3 x 7 bays.

Main entrance to Sauchiehall Street: tall, round-headed

recessed porch with sculpture group of Bank of Scotland

coat of arms over door; incised lettering above -

BANK OF SCOTLAND - flanked by 2 sculpted figures.

Between 1st and 2nd floors dentil and Greek key frieze.

3rd and 4th floors linked by giant Doric pilastrade

with rosette necking and recessed bronze panels at 3rd

floor level. Entablature with fluted frieze, sculpted

details above pilasters and modillion cornice. All

windows casement with metal glazing bars.

ELEVATION TO SAUCHIEHALL STREET: entrance flanked by 2

recessed margined windows with bronze guards and

sculpted panels above breaking into 2 gun-port type

recess margined lights. 1st floor 3 4-light oblong

windows with recessed cills, dropped in outer bays.

3rd and 4th floors 6 symmetrical 6-light windows to

each floor.

ELEVATION TO BLYTHSWOOD STREET: 5 round-headed windows

with geometrical glazing bars rising through 1st

and 2nd floors lighting banking hall, flanked by outer

bays treated like Sauchiehall Street ground floor outer bays,

entry to upper floors with fanlights at No 147 Blythswood Street.

3rd and 4th floor windows repeats Sauchiehall Street elevation

on 7 bays. Slate roof. End stack.

INTERIOR: 5 x 3 bay banking hall with dentilled, coved,

and coffered ceiling; anthemion Bank of Scotland

motif repeated at frieze height between bays. Marble

tiled floor and polished marble walls. Carved timber

bank fittings. Etched glass.

Statement of Special Interest

Masons: P and W Anderson (Glasgow) Ltd; bank finishings -

John Cochran decorative bronze work - Charles Henshaw;

plaster work - Wm Forbes & Sons; 2 sculpted figures and

bronze coat of arms at entrance by Benno Schotz.

Unusual plan with left-hand turn from vestibule to

banking hall.

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.
