Archibald Macpherson (Edinburgh), 1883 (main block) and
1902 (original single storey wings enlarged). Italian
Renaissance. 4 storeys. Polished ashlar. Sash and case
windows in architraves with glazing bars.
3-bay main block: wide central bay with recessed
pedimented portico (rising into 1st floor), Roman Ionic
columns in antis; flanking windows; low 1st floor 4
symmetrical 2-light windows, central pair partially
obscured by pediment. 2-storey upper section with full-
height central recessed bay under triple arch, with
balconies at 2nd and 3rd floors, flanked by symmetrically
arranged pedimented windows at 2nd, 2-light column
mullioned sashes at 3rd. Eaves cornice.
ELEVATION TO DALHOUSIE STREET: 5 bays. 2nd floor 4
pedimented windows; flanking, small central column
mullioned 2-light pedimented window. 2nd floor 4 smaller
windows breaking through upper string course flanking
roundheaded pediment window. 2 shaped, pedimented stacks.
Datestone marked "1885".
SINGLE STOREY WINGS: rusticated plinth; quasi-Venetian
window with 2 windows flanking segmental-headed window in
pedimented niche; balustrade above cornice.
ELEVATION OF WING TO DALHOUSIE STREET: 7 bays. 2 and
3-light columned lintelled windows with lunettes over
central light of 3-light windows. Single western return
bay to lane with 3-light window and small crescent window
above blocking course.
