Description

Circa 1775; restored by Robert Hurd and Partners, 1980s. 3-storey basement and attic former tenement on corner site. Droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Channelled quoin strips.

ST DAVID STREET ELEVATION: 6-bay. 2-bay wallhead gable, with pair of architraved and corniced doorpieces to centre bays.

QUEEN STREET ELEVATION: 4-bay gable. Projecting 19th century shopfront removed at ground.

INTERIOR: now single office. Former flats with fanlit hallway; N rooms to each flat (with view to Leith) with fine carved and gesso timber chimneypieces; cornices survive throughout.

Statement of Special Interest

Listed at Category A as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. It is of note that these flats were built with Drawing Rooms taking advantage of the view to Leith, rather than being at the front of the building as was usual.
