Description

Circa 1790. 3-storey basement and attic, 5-bay former classical tenement. Droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Rusticated at ground; eaves cornice. Steps to arched tripartite pilastered doorpiece with fluted frieze and radiating fanlight at centre; steps survive to former common stair door at left, but door now blocked as window. Pair of earlier 19th century piend-roofed tripartite dormers.

Rubble gable end to S with windows at centre. Irregular 3-bay rubble rear elevation; tripartite windows to left, arched stair window at centre; full attic storey.

Timber sash and case 12-pane windows. Ashlar coped skews; rebuilt stacks, rendered to S; grey slates.

INTERIOR: tripartite timber lobby screen; 19th century timber dog-leg stair on axis. NE room at ground with pilastered sideboard recess and carved and painted chimneypiece. Common stair removed.

RAILINGS: cast-iron spearhead railings to front.

Statement of Special Interest

The common stair was formerly No 10. A significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. South Charlotte Street is important for its contribution to the setting of Charlotte Square.
