Description

Probably Andrew Scobie for himself, 1888, altered. 3-storey and attic; 3-bay; semi-detached commercial building with ground and 1st floor shopfrontage. Italianate design with pilastered principal (E) elevation, arcaded windows to 1st floor and pedimented main entrance. Polished ashlar principal elevation; brick side elevations with ashlar dressings. Moulded cornice to ground-floor shopfront fascia; moulded band course above 1st floor windows with moulded cornice above frieze formed above (adjoining cills of 2nd floor windows); eaves cornice. Architraves to windows to 1st and 2nd floors of principal elevation; those to 2nd floor are lugged. Coped gables.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: pilastered entrance to outer left; consoled cornice supports elaborate frieze with scrolled sides and central cartouche dated 1888 with flanking swags; pediment above; 2-leaf 6-panel timber door with rectangular fanlight. Late 20th century glazed shopfronts, partly recessed, to right. Entrance with plain timber door and rectangular fanlight to outer right. Flanking rusticated corner pilasters to 3 main floors, except to outer right of ground floor. 1st floor bays divided by rusticated pilasters; those to 2nd floor by panelled pilasters. 3-light round-arched arcaded window to each bay to 1st floor; pilastered mullions. 2-light window to each bay to 2nd floor. Polygonal piended dormer to each bay above.

S ELEVATION: irregular fenestration; stone cills to windows; Round-arched stair window with border-glazing to right.

Mainly 2-pane timber sash and case windows. Flanking gablehead stacks with moulded cornices. Grey slate roof.

INTERIOR: not inspected (1998).

Statement of Special Interest

Alterations are recorded in 1913 for Andrew Scobie: not signed, but presumably for himself.

However, for listed buildings designated or for listings amended from 1 October 2015, legal exclusions to the listing may apply.

The statement will use the word 'excluding' and quote the relevant section of the 1997 Act.
